Sited at the southern tip of the holy pilgrimage place of Bardsey Island, this light marks the division between Cardigan and Caernarfon Bays. Ships heading north to Anglesey and along the coast to England stay to the west, those going to local Welsh ports keep to the east. It is the tallest square tower lighthouse in Britain. The island is a nature reserve and can be visited on day trips as well as for multi-night stays at some of the old farmhouses and cottages. The light is still active, operated by Trinity House.
