A lighthouse occupied the end of the 600m long breakwater that was built in 1906 to facilitate a new ferry route to Rosslare, Ireland. That rubble-built defensive structure was often damaged by storms and over the next decade it was reinforced and extended by 300m. The current octagonal lighthouse was then constructed at the end. The lighthouse and breakwater are off limits as part of the ferry port operations.
