Monkstone

Located 4.5 km upstream from Flat Holm, the current granite tower was originally an unlit beacon erected on the dangerous Monkstone Rock, replacing an earlier cast iron mast. Both were topped with a globe to act as a visual daymark for mariners. In 1899 a petition by mariners on the Bristol Channel asked for it to be upgraded to a lighthouse and in 1903 a lantern, along with a tank holding a three month’s supply of gas, was added to the top. A gallery and new lantern were added in 1925, and it was electrified with solar power in 1993.
