This unusual lighthouse marks the entrance to Swansea Bay and guides ships around the dangerous Mixon Shoals and Cherrystone Rock. It is a two-level structure, with a smaller octagonal section perched on top of a larger octagonal base. This allowed two coal fires to be lit, one above the other, but these were replaced with a single oil lamp in 1798. The sure-footed visitors can clamber over the rocks at low tide to reach the island and view the lighthouse and abandoned military structures, but be wary of being cut off at high tide.
