This and the associated High tower acted as leading lights, warning mariners of the dangerous Nash Sands sandbanks to the west. Just a year before they were opened a passenger paddle steamer, Frolic, wrecked there with the loss of 78 lives. It was closed in the 1920s after red sector filters were added to the high light marking out the danger zones. The lantern was removed in the 1950s.
