Like the Great Orme, this lighthouse was built by Mersey Docks and has its lantern at ground level atop high cliffs. The castellated building replaced an earlier light shining from the upstairs window of a building housing pilots who guided ships into Liverpool. The light is still active, run by Trinity House, but the rest of the surrounding buildings have been converted to holiday accommodation.
