Erected to mark the entrance to the River Dee, this brick-built tower was originally sited above the shoreline, but the beach has now encroached upon it. It showed a light from the top of the tower westwards along the coast, and another from a window at 2.5m facing east. In 1844 it was replaced by a new light and accommodation block on cast iron piles built further offshore, which itself was succeeded by a light ship in 1883.
