Porthcawl is the star of numerous dramatic photographs in newspapers and TV weather reports, with crashing waves towering over the lighthouse and breakwater during stormy weather. The short hexagonal tower is made of cast iron, one of only two in Wales (the other being Whiteford). For much of its life it was powered by gas, firstly manufactured town gas, and then after 1974 by North Sea natural gas. Before conversion the keepers had to feed coins into the meter to keep the gas flowing. It was electrified in 1997, one of the last in the UK to be converted.
