Built at the end of a pier enclosing a coal and limestone-exporting harbour, this lighthouse originally had a lantern topped with an unusual ogee-shaped dome (S-shaped in profile, rather than a simple curve). It is also unusual in that it was lit by candles, up until at least 1893. The light was extinguished in 1947 after the decline of the local mining but was rebuilt for leisure yacht traffic in 1954. It now has an electric beacon on top of the simple domed roof.
