Built on an isolated island during World War I, it was the last proper lighthouse (i.e. one you can go inside of) to be built in Wales. It is part of a quartet of lights, along with the Smalls, South Bishop and St Ann’s Head, guiding ships towards Milford Haven and the Bristol Channel. The original Fresnel lens was replaced by a smaller 4th order one around 1971, then by an LED lamp in 2012. It is now owned by the Wildlife Trust of South and West Wales, housing their wardens looking after the island’s nature reserve, but the lamp is still operated by Trinity House.
