This tower, along with St Ann’s Head Low, acted as leading lights, which mariners used to ensure they were clear of dangerous rocks near the coast to the east. In 1910 this was decommissioned, the low light was upgraded and red sector light filters were added to replace the leading light function. Early in the Second World War the lantern of this tower was replaced with a military lookout room. It is now a private property, used for holiday lets, and was up for sale at the time of writing for £750,000.
