When the breakwater in nearby Fishguard harbour was built in 1906 a temporary light was erected at Strumble Head, replaced by the current one in 1908. As well as guiding ships to Fishguard, it is also within sight of the South Bishop, allowing mariners to determine their location. Like South Stack, this is on a small islet, Ynys Meicel, accessed by a bridge. It is off limits to the public, but magnificent views can be had along the nearby clifftops.
