A lighthouse on wooden piles was originally erected to mark the sandbanks on the Loughor Estuary, leading to Llanelli, but it was soon replaced by the current structure. It is very unusual, made from cast iron plates bolted together through external flanges. It closed in 1921 when it was replaced by a short (3.5 m) metal lighthouse at Burry Holmes, 6.5 km to the southwest, which itself was shut down in 1939. The lighthouse is accessible across the sands at low tides, but is 0.75 km beyond the high tide mark, so care must be taken.
